Volleyball Falls to USM, UMPI in Road Tri-Match

GORHAM, Maine – The Castleton University volleyball team dropped a pair of contests on the road on Saturday afternoon, falling in a Little East Conference matchup with the University of Southern Maine before falling in a non-conference battle to the University of Maine Presque Isle.

The losses drop Castleton to 0-9 on the season and 0-2 in LEC action. USM is now 9-4 after a pair of 3-0 victories while UMPI now sits at 5-5 following a 1-1 day.

The Spartans opened the day with a 3-0 loss to USM, falling 25-6, 25-7, 25-6 in straight sets. Shannon Manchester had a team-leading five digs in the opening match, while Brooke Young tallied four digs of her own.

Castleton took the first set of the match from UMPI, 25-19, but the Owls turned it around in the following sets as they closed out the match with set wins of 25-9, 25-17 and 25-11. Manchester racked up seven kills and a team-high eight total points, while Meghan Zawatsky tallied 13 digs. Madison Hamelink notched seven digs of her own with three kills offensively, while Gabrielle Carpenter and Alondra Nims added three kills apiece. Brianna Hake collected 10 assists in the match.

Castleton returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Green Mountain in a non-conference matchup at Glenbrook Gym. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
