NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Castleton University volleyball team lost to MCLA, 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-12), Thursday night in a non-conference contest.
Maria Jackson led the Castleton offense with five kills and five assists, while Meghan Zawatsky paced the defense with nine digs. The Spartans collected more attack errors (21) than kills (16) and only managed two service aces after earning at least 10 aces in eight of the previous nine matches.
The two teams exchanged the first 14 points of the match for a 7-7 tie before MCLA scored nine unanswered points, led by Natasha Stewart with three service aces. The Trailblazers scored the final six points of the opening set, capped by two kills from Parker Snyder within the last three points.
In the second set, MCLA scored four of the first five points, but Castleton responded with three straight points to tie the set at 4-4. The Trailblazers once again strung nine straight points together, led by Maggie Allen with two kills and a block. The two teams basically exchanged points the rest of the way, with Allen earning consecutive kills to clinch the second set for MCLA.
Castleton scored the first two points of the third set, but MCLA earned the next four points, half of them on kills by Melissa Hopkins. After a service ace by Jess Grace tied the set at 6-6, the Trailblazers put together an 8-1 scoring run to pull out to a 14-7 advantage. MCLA closed out the set and the match with a 10-3 scoring run, led by Alyssa Keegan with three kills during that stretch.
MCLA (6-14) posted a .329 hitting percentage, led by Keegan with 10 kills to go along with a .471 hitting percentage. Tayler Wiese earned 17 assists and eight digs, Stewart contributed 15 assists, four service aces, and five digs, and Mele Enomoto led the Trailblazers with 11 defensive digs.
Castleton (5-11) returns to conference play Saturday, Oct. 14, with matches against Husson at 12 noon and host Maine Maritime at 4 p.m. The Spartans host SUNY Cobleskill next Tuesday, Oct. 17, starting at 7 p.m. at Glenbrook Gym in the Dig Pink and Senior Night match.
