CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Castleton University volleyball team concluded play Saturday at the Blazer Invitational, losing to host Elms College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-7, 25-16), at Picknelly Arena.
Shannon Manchester led Castleton with six kills, a .294 hitting percentage with just one attack error, and two total blocks, earning All-Tournament honors. Alexia Lengyel led the Spartan defense with 13 digs, joined by Kimberly Jackson with 12 digs and Jess Grace with 11 digs.
Elms (3-0) scored six straight points to take a 7-2 lead early in the first set, and then put together another 6-0 run midway through the set, led by Rachel Magnuson with two kills and a block and Kate Moriarty with two service aces. After a service ace by Jackson, Elms closed out the set with a 10-4 scoring run, capped by a service ace by Danielle Redding.
Redding collected three more service aces as Elms scored seven straight points early in the second set, and the home team continually extended the lead, closing out the second set on a kill by Hannah Pichardo. Castleton scored five of the first six points of the third set and held a 15-12 lead, but Elms went on a 13-1 scoring run to finish off the set and the match.
Castleton (0-3) faces SUNY Cobleskill for the second time in six days when the Spartans travel to take on the Fighting Tigers Wednesday, Sept. 6, beginning at 7 p.m.
