WATERVILLE, Maine – After leading Castleton in digs during a tri-match at Elms College Saturday, senior J'Leen Diaz has been named the North Atlantic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.
Diaz collected 36 digs in matches against Lesley University and Elms College Saturday, averaging 4.5 digs per set as the Spartans went 1-1. She has reached double figures in digs in nine matches overall, including five straight matches, and is fifth in the conference with 3.68 digs per set so far this season.
In a 3-2 loss to Lesley, Diaz led the Spartans with 23 digs, helping Castleton rally from a 2-0 match deficit to force a deciding fifth set. Against Elms, Diaz finished with 13 digs and seven kills as the Spartans picked up a 3-0 victory.
Diaz has already past her previous best single-season totals in both kills and digs, accumulating 100 kills and 184 digs so far in 2016. She has moved into fourth place on Castleton's career digs list with 521.
Diaz, picking up her first career league honor, becomes the first Castleton volleyball player honored with a conference weekly award this season. She is the first Spartan weekly honoree since Cassidy Tedeschi was named NAC Player of the Week Sept. 28, 2015.
Castleton (7-7, 1-1 NAC) completes a stretch of 10 straight matches away from home Wednesday, Oct. 12, at SUNY Cobleskill starting at 7 p.m. The Spartans return to Glenbrook Gym for the first time in over a month Saturday, Oct. 15, for league matchups against Colby-Sawyer at 12 noon and Maine Maritime at 2 p.m.
