Spartan Volleyball Back on Road Saturday at Elms College

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University volleyball team heads to Chicopee, Mass., for a tri-match Saturday, Oct. 8, first facing Lesley University in a neutral site contest at 1 p.m. before taking on host Elms College at 3 p.m.

The Spartans enter the weekend with a 6-6 overall record after splitting their first two conference matches of the season last Saturday, defeating Maine-Presque Isle and losing to Husson University. Castleton is continuing a stretch of 10 straight matches away from home, with a trip to SUNY Cobleskill on the horizon Wednesday before the team finally plays its first home match in over a month next Saturday.

Cassidy Tedeschi continues to lead the Spartans offensively with 2.33 kills per set, currently fifth in the North Atlantic Conference. She is also fifth in the league with 0.67 service aces per set, with teammate Kimberly Jackson second in the NAC and seventh in the country with 0.90 service aces per set. J'Leen Diaz has moved into fifth in the league with a team-high 3.52 digs per set, and Alex Madsen is third in the conference with 5.48 assists per set.

Lesley University is 3-10 overall after losing at Anna Maria College Thursday night, 3-0. The Lynx are led by Kaylee Deluga with 127 kills, a .255 hitting percentage, and 22 total blocks, plus she has collected 119 digs. Anni Abbruzzese has contributed 89 kills, 136 digs, and a team-high 20 service aces so far this season, with Vera Bednar leading Lesley with 209 assists and Jess Reynolds pacing the backline defense with 149 digs.

This will be the first meeting between Lesley and Castleton since Sept. 22, 2007, when Lesley was also a member of the North Atlantic Conference. The Lynx are 3-0 against the Spartans, winning all three matches with 3-0 decisions.

Elms College is 4-13 overall, seeing a three-match winning streak snapped by Mount Holyoke Thursday night, 3-0. Danielle Redding leads the Blazers with 170 kills, 31 service aces, and 14 total blocks, plus she is second on the team with 147 digs. Hannah Adams is first on the squad with 197 digs to go along with 124 kills. Carolyn Campbell has run the Blazer offense throughout the season, accumulating 316 assists so far this year.

After five straight victories by Elms over Castleton since 2005, the Spartans broke through last season with a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-19, 25-16) over the Blazers at Glenbrook Gym Sept. 25, 2015.
