CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University volleyball team makes the short trip south to Poultney, Vt., to face Green Mountain College and Lyndon State in a non-conference tri-match Saturday, Sept. 17.
The Spartans will face the host Eagles at 10 a.m., followed at 12 noon by the first of two matches this season against the Hornets at Green Mountain College.
Castleton enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record after defeating SUNY Cobleskill in four sets Tuesday night at Glenbrook Gym. Cassidy Tedeschi led the Spartans with 14 kills and a .231 hitting percentage, while Kimberly Jackson continued her stellar service game with six aces and J'Leen Diaz led the defense with 18 digs.
Tedeschi is currently fourth in the North Atlantic Conference with 2.58 kills per set as she leads the Spartans with 49 total kills. Alex Madsen is third in the league in assists with 5.89 assists per set, and Kimberly Jackson has collected 17 service aces, sitting second in the conference and 23rd in the country with 0.89 aces per set.
Green Mountain College is 0-3 after losing at home to SUNY Cobleskill Thursday night, 3-0. Torie Cowell leads the team with six kills, five total blocks, and two service aces.
Lyndon State will bring a 2-3 overall record into the tri-match, losing an exhibition at NHTI Wednesday, 3-1. The Hornets last played an official contest one week ago, losing to MCLA, 3-2, before rallying from a 2-1 match deficit to defeat Norwich, winning the fourth set 26-24 and the fifth set 16-14.
Three Hornets have collected at least 40 kills so far this season, with Abbey Greene leading the way with 41 kills, followed by Lauren McDonough and Kelleigh Murtagh with 40 kills apiece. McDonough leads Lyndon State with 19 service aces and 76 digs, while Murtagh has a team-high 10 total blocks along with 11 service aces.
Castleton brings a nine-match winning streak over Green Mountain into Saturday's contest, including a 3-1 victory in the first round of the 2012 NAC Tournament. The Eagles last defeated the Spartans in 2011, sweeping both matches between the two teams that season.
Since 2011, Castleton holds a 5-3 series edge over Lyndon State, including a 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2013 NAC Tournament. Last season, the Spartans swept the Hornets in both matches featuring the two squads.
