CASTLETON, Vt. – After playing to an opening-week record of 1-2, the Castleton women's volleyball team is back in action tonight when it hosts Southern Vermont in a non-conference matchup at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
Last time out, the Spartans split a doubleheader with UMaine-Presque Isle and U. of Southern Maine, sweeping UMPI before falling in three sets to Southern Maine.
Cassidy Tedeschi leads the team with 24 kills and is averaging 2.40 kills per set. She is also tied for second on the squad with 26 digs, matching the amount that J'Leen Diaz has also posted. Diaz ranks second on the team with 20 digs and a .108 kill percentage. Alex Madsen has racked up 51 assists through 10 sets this season, accounting for more three-fourths of the team's assists. Kimberly Jackson is tops on the team in digs, with 31, and is also tied with Madsen and Maria Jackson for the team lead in service aces, with three.
Southern Vermont enters the mid-week matchup with a record of 0-3, falling in straight sets in each of their three matches so far. Last weekend, the Mountaineers faced off with a trio of SUNY schools at the Canton Invitational, most recently falling 3-0 to SUNY Canton.
Brin Goldman leads the team with 23 kills on 69 attempts, good for a .174 kill percentage. Goldman also leads the way with 41 digs, while Gaby Oropeza has collected 29 digs to date. Michelle Urkevich has played a pivotal role as a setter, recording 25 of the team's 29 assists, while tallying a team-leading 13 service aces.
Over the last five matchups between the two squads, Southern Vermont holds a 3-2 edge. The Spartans won the most recent battle, taking a 3-0 victory a season ago. In that contest, Tedeschi had four kills and nine digs, while the Spartans recorded 20 service aces as a team.
