CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's volleyball team dropped its season-opening match on Thursday evening by a final score of 3-1 against Morrisville St. at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
Alex Madsen had a team-leading 19 assists in the contest for the Spartans, while Kimberly Jackson led the squad with 14 digs. J'Leen Diaz tallied eight kills for Castleton to go along with 11 digs. The Spartans as a team struggled with hitting percentage, recording 33 errors with 28 kills in total.
Morrisville St.'s Helena Hanes racked up 11 kills and 15 assists in the match, and Kimberly Dunkleman led all players with 17 assists. The Mustangs as a team tallied a .138 kill percentage.
Morrisville St. got out to a commanding two-sets-to-none lead, but Castleton came back in the third set with a 25-22 victory to halve the Mustangs' edge. After being tied at 22-22 late in the third set, Castleton came away with three consecutive points to force a fourth set.
The Spartans gained an early 4-3 lead in that fourth set, but Morrisville St. pulled away by outscoring Castleton 22-10 the rest of the way.
The Spartans are back in action on Sunday when they travel to the U. of Southern Maine to face off with both USM and UMaine-Presque Isle. Match one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
