CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans resume their season this Saturday when they take part in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tri-match with Johnson St. and Lyndon St beginning at noon.
Castleton heads into the weekend tied for third place in the NAC with a 2-2 conference and an 8-12 overall record. The Spartans are coming off of a decisive 3-1 victory over Green Mountain last Saturday. In the match reigning NAC Defensive Player of the Week Amanda Chambers, recorded a career-high 28 digs, two blocks and six kills.
On the season, Kaylee Pratt leads the team with 1.74 kills per set followed by Chambers (1.58) and Cassidy Tedeschi (1.32). Chambers has also produced a team-leading 267 digs this season, averaging 3.76 digs per set. Shelby Smyth has notched a team-high 33 service aces and ranks fourth in the NAC with 186 assists (3.05 per set) this year, while Michaela Babineau is second on the team with 175 assists (2.69 per set).
Coming into Saturday's action, Johnson St. is 4-15 (1-3 NAC) after dropping its second straight match last Saturday at Maine Maritime, 3-0. Breanna Laughlin ranks fifth in the NAC with an average of 2.35 kills per set and leads the team with 162 total kills. The outside hitter is also second on the team in digs with 131, behind Domonique Carter who has tallied 138 digs with an average of 2.76 per set this season.
Lyndon St. (6-11, 2-2 NAC) enters the weekend on a three-game losing streak following its 3-2 loss against Husson on Saturday. Laura Drake is averaging a team-high 2.39 digs per set followed by Kelleigh Murtagh (2.38) and Gwyneth Stahl (2.28). Murtagh also ranks second in total kills with 78, trailing only Abbey Greene who leads the team with 99.
Castleton squared off with the Hornets earlier in the season, beating them in three sets 25-14, 25-18, 28-26. In that contest, Chambers recorded 15 digs with eight kills, and Kristi Lawless added 13 digs and two services aces to pick up the victory. The Spartans last faced the Badgers in 2013, defeating Johnson St. 3-0.
