CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton looks to move closer to .500 when the team hosts SUNY Cobleskill tonight in Glenbrook at 7 pm in a match that is destined to be hard-fought between two evenly matched squads.
The Spartans and Fighting Tigers have played twice already this year with Cobleskill winning both by tight 3-2 margins. In both matches this year Castleton fell behind 2-1 but came back in the fourth to force a final set. Kaylee Pratt has been solid in both matches, recording six and eight kills while Amanda Chambers and Kristi Lawless provided the defense on the back row.
After winning two of their last three matches the Spartans come into today's match with a 6-11 record overall. Last weekend Castleton opened with a dominant 3-1 victory over Mass. Maritime before falling 3-1 to Gordon. Chambers averaged 4.75 digs per set over the two matches to lead the team.
This year the Spartans are averaging 8.30 kills and 16.23 digs per set. Pratt has been the team's most effective hitter, with a .135 attack percentage and 1.69 kills per set. Amanda Chambers is right behind her (1.51) while Cassidy Tedeschi is averaging 1.25 kills per set. Defensively, Chambers leads the team with 3.52 digs per set, followed by Kristi Lawless at 2.70. Shelby Smyth and Michaela Babineau have shared setting duties, combining to average 5.49 assists per set. Smyth also leads the team with 26 service aces, followed by Lawless, who has 25.
The Fighting Tigers enter today's match with a 10-11 record but are mired in a five-game losing streak. For the year they are averaging 7.34 kills and 13.72 digs per set. Melissa Spears leads the team with 1.90 kills per set, followed by Alex Worthington at 1.53 and Brandi Persico at 1.39. Defensively, Noelle Horton leads the team with 3.52 digs per set while Kim Cordova is right behind her with 3.49 per set. Sarah Ruggles helps set up the offense, averaging 5.40 assists per set.
