Castleton Plays in Tri-Match at Gordon on Saturday

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans look to record their second consecutive and sixth overall victory on Saturday as they travel to Wenham, Mass. for a tri-match against Gordon and Massachusetts Maritime.

Castleton, who is 5-10 overall (1-1 NAC), enter Saturday after splitting a pair of contests last weekend in a tri-match at Colby-Sawyer. Brittany Brayman recorded 23 digs and 13 kills in the two matches, while Amanda Chambers tallied 19 digs with ten kills.

In 2014, Chambers has recorded 82 kills for an average of 1.52 kills per set with Kaylee Pratt and Cassidy Tedeschi following behind with respective totals of 75 (1.74 per set) and 69 (1.30 per set). Chambers also leads the team with 177 digs and an average of 3.34 digs per set proceeded by Kristi Lawless with 139 (2.62 per set) and Brayman 124 (2.53 per set). Setter Shelby Smyth ranks fourth in the NAC with 145 saves for an average of 3.15 saves per set, while Michaela Babineau has 124 saves for an average of 2.43 saves per set this season. 

Massachusetts Maritime comes into Saturday's match with a record of 0-16 (0-3 MASCAC) after falling to Pine Manor in straight sets this past Wednesday. Charleen Klangos recorded a team-high 13 digs and five kills in the losing effort.

On the season the Buccaneers have averaged 3.9 kills, 3.2 assists and 9.3 digs per set. Meaghan Brain has tallied a team-high 47 kills with a an average of 1.02 kills per set followed by Klangos with 42 kills (0.89 per set) and Deb Langley with 31 kills (0.63). Klangos leads the team with 83 digs, while Langley has notched 81 digs and a team-high 63 assists so far this season.

The last meeting between these two squads occurred in 2013 when Castleton beat Massachusetts Maritime in back-to-back matches with identical scores of 3-0.

Gordon heads into Saturday's contest with a record of 7-11 (0-4 CCC) after dropping its eighth consecutive match on Wednesday at Salve Regina, 3-0. Joy Kimmel tallied a team-high 19 assists with 8 digs and three kills in the loss.

Overall, the Fighting Scots have averaged 8.9 kills. 8.0 assists and 15.8 digs per set in 2014. Faith Gerdes leads the team with 135 total kills and an average of 2.11 per set followed by Jessica Burdick with 123 (1.92 per set) and Laura Schmidt with 108 (1.93 per set). Kimmel has notched a team high 479 assists thus far, posting the fourth best assist per game average (7.37 per set) in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Maggie Risma has notched team and conference highs in digs and digs per set with 347 digs and an average of 5.42 digs per set.

The Spartans and Gordon squared off in a tri-match last season where the Fighting Scots picked up a 3-1 victory. Chambers tallied 22 digs with seven kills in the match for Castleton.
