CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton volleyball team capped off homecoming weekend with a dominant 3-0 victory over Lyndon St. and went 1-1 overall on Sunday in Glenbrook Gym.
The Spartans opened the day by facing off against a tough Southern Vt. squad. Castleton trailed 16-20 in the opening set but came back to take the victory 25-23. The team stumbled in the second set, falling behind early before dropping it 25-21. The Spartans once again put themselves in a hole and were unable to get out in the third, losing 25-22. In the fourth, they jumped out to leads of 15-6 and 22-18, but the Mountaineers charged back to take the final seven points and earn a 25-22 victory.
Jessica Delgado was a force for Southern Vt. ripping off 30 kills while still hitting .377, and added 23 digs. Brian Goldman was also strong with 23 digs, nine kills and four aces. Setter Sheilani Kaleopa added 35 assists, 10 kills,nine digs and six aces for a near triple-double.
For Castleton, Amanda Chambers had a team-high 15 kills with 15 digs while hitting .250. Kaylee Pratt also had double-figure kills with ten while Shelby Smyth dished off 20 assists and recorded 15 digs. Kelly Mills was solid with 17 digs and six kills in the loss.
The Mountaineers took on Lyndon in the second match of the day in Glenbrook and needed all five sets to get past the Hornets. In the an epic set, Southern Vt. came back from the edge of defeat to win 32-20 in the opening set. The team followed it with a 25-22 victory to go ahead 2-0. However, Lyndon countered with an impressive 25-18 win in set three and then took the fourth 25-20 to force one final set to 15. It was the Mountaineers who made the plays as they jumped out to an early lead and held on for the 15-13 win.
Delgado was once again the focus of the offense, recording an impressive 71 attacks while registering 25 kills and hitting .338. She added 18 digs and five aces in the match as well. Goldman served as the team's primary setting, dishing off 22 assists to go along with 16 digs and six kills. Alexandra Sinicropi chipped in with 21 digs, 13 assists, six aces and eight kills in the win.
Sophomore Abbey Green led the Hornet attack with 16 kills and eight digs while Laura Drake recorded a double-double of 14 digs and 13 kills. Kelleigh Murtagh led the defensive effort with 22 digs and also had eight kills.
Castleton returned to the court for the final match of the afternoon to face Lyndon. The Spartans look sharp and needed just three sets to dispatch the Hornets.
The Spartans hit .257 with 14 kills to take the opening set 25-14 and then fought off an early deficit to take the second set 25-18. The third set was back-and-forth in its entirety, until a little run put Castleton on the edge of victory at 24-21. Lyndon responded with the next three points, but eventually the Spartans took the win with a Hornet service error and an ace from Brittany Brayman for the 28-26 win.
Brayman was all over the court, with 13 kills, 13 digs and three aces in the win. Chambers, meanwhile, put forth her second strong effort with eight kills and 15 digs. Michaela Babineau dished off a team-high 19 assists and had eight digs while Kristi Lawless added 13 digs.
Lyndon recorded just 24 kills, led by Green with six, though she hit -0.077. Gwyneth Stahl led the team with 14 digs, nine assists and added five kills while Laura Drake had 11 kills and eight assists.
The Spartans move to 3-6 with the split while the Hornets drop to 2-7 overall. Southern Vt. is now 4-3 with its two wins.
Castleton returns to action on Wednesday when the team hosts Green Mountain at 7 pm in Glenbrook Gym.
