CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans return to the friendly confines of the Glenbrook Gym this Sunday during Homecoming weekend as they host both Southern Vt. and Lyndon, beginning at 11 am.
Castleton is 2-5 overall after going 1-1 last weekend. The Spartans opened with a 3-0 victory over Maine Presque Isle but fell to SUNY Cobleskill by a 3-2 margin in their final match of the day. Kristi Lawless recorded a team-high 23 digs in the loss.
The Spartans are averaging 7.38 kills per set this year with 13.08 digs per set. Brittany Brayman leads the team with 2.04 kills per set while Kaylee Pratt is second with 1.26 kills per set. Brayman also averages 1.85 digs per set and leads the team with ten aces. Amanda Chambers currently leads the team with 2.65 digs pet set while Kristi Lawless is right behind her with 2.62 digs per set. Shelby Smyth leads the team with 3.29 assists per set while averaging 1.48 digs per set.
Southern Vt. enters Sunday's match with a 2-3 record, including a 3-1 victory over Mount Idea earlier this week. The team's other win was a 3-1 decision against MCLA. Senior Jessica Delgado leads the team with 2.71 kills per set while Katie Cerulo is second at 2.00 kills per set. As a team, the Mountaineers are averaging 12.59 digs per set led by Delgado. She is averaging 3.06 digs per set while Alexandra Sinicropi is second at 2.62. Shellani Kaleopa is third on the team in digs (2.35) and leads the team with 5.53 assists per set.
Lyndon enters the weekend with a 2-5 record this year. The Hornets opened the year 2-0 but have lost five in a row. This season they are averaging 5.17 kills per set and 13.29 digs per set. Abbey Greene leads the team with 1.46 kills per set while Kelleigh Murtagh is averaging 1.04 kills per set. Murtagh leads the team with 2.42 digs per set while Gwyneth Stahl is averaging 2.12 digs per set. Laura Drake leads the team with 1.96 assists per set and is second in digs (2.29).
Castleton didn't play the Mountaineers last year but dropped 3-0 matches to Southern Vt. in 2011 and 2012. The Spartans meanwhile, went 1-1 against Lyndon in 2013. They fell to the Hornets 3-2 on the road but took them down in comeback fashion in the NAC Quarterfinals last year. In that match they fell behind 2-1 but came back to win 3-2, including a 15-13 win in the final set. Kaylee Pratt had 14 kills in the victory.
