CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans look to earn their first victories of the season when they travel to Southern Maine to face off against Maine-Presque Isle and host Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon.
Castleton is coming off a tough 3-2 loss to SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday evening. The Spartans won the first set but dropped the next two before winning the fourth set to force a fifth. The Fighting Tigers pulled out the final set 15-13. Sophomore J'Leen Diaz was solid in the loss, with nine digs, eight kills and two aces. Kristi Lawless added 15 digs and three aces.
The Spartans are 0-3 on the season, averaging 6.83 kills per set and 13.50 digs per set. Brittany Brayman leads the team with 2.25 kills per set while Diaz is second with 1.58 per set. Defensively, three players are averaging at least 1.90 digs per set, led by Kristi Lawless with 2.67 digs per set. Shelby Smyth leads the team with six service aces and 2.83 assists per set.
Maine-Presque Isle is 0-4 this season following the Husson Invitational last weekend. The Owls dropped 3-0 decisions to Husson, Unity, Maine-Fort Kent and Unity College over the two days. Against the Eagles in its season-opener Presque Isle fell 25-16, 25-10 and 26-24.
Southern Maine comes into today's action with a perfect 3-0 record. The Huskies opened the year last Saturday by dispatching Maine Maritime and St. Joseph's (Me.) by matching 3-0 scores. They then beat Daniel Webster 3-1 on Wednesday. Freshman Jessica Williamson is averaging a team-best 4.2 kills per set and 2.3 digs per game. Megan Nilson leads the team with 8.4 assists per set.
Last year Castleton lost to Southern Maine by a 3-1 margin. In that contest, Brittany Brayman led the team with six kills and 14 digs.
