CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans came up short in a pair of matches on Saturday to open their season, dropping a 3-0 decision to Anna Maria and then falling to a tough MCLA squad 3-1 in Glenbrook Gym.
In the first match against the AMCATS, Castleton lost the first set 25-17 and nearly took the second set before falling 25-20. In the final set the Spartans were tied early before falling behind 20-15. They came back to tie it 23 apiece on a service ace by Shelby Smyth before a kill by Jessica Goulet put Anna Maria on the edge of victory. Castleton tied it back up at 25, but two AMCAT points ended the match.
Brittany Brayman led the offense with 16 kills and hit .367 with three digs to lead the offense. Smyth did a bit of everything with 14 assists, six digs and two aces while Kristi Lawless had a team-high 12 digs.
Goulet led Anna Maria with 12 kills and five aces while Samantha Parker had 25 assists, ten digs and three kills. Brianna Laregina added six kills, six digs and five aces.
Castleton struggled in its first two sets against MCLA, falling 25-11 and 25-14 to the Trailblazers. In the third set the Spartans took 16-6 lead and held on for the dominating 25-13 victory. They couldn't keep up the momentum in the final set after falling behind 9-1. Castleton made a run but came up short, 25-17.
J'Leen Diaz finished with a team-high nine kills and hit .300 while adding six digs. Chambers led the team with 15 digs, five kills and one ace while Smyth had nine assists, nine digs and two aces.
Margaret Allen hit .435 to lead MCLA with 13 kills while Brianne O'Rourke added nine kills. Alexandra Change had a team-high 14 digs and recorded three kills. Courtney Parent had 19 assists and five aces.
Castleton returns to action on Wednesday when the team travels to face SUNY Cobleskill.
