CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's volleyball team had their chances throughout the match but were unable to come away with the victory on Monday night, falling to visiting Cobleskill by a 3-1 score in Glenbrook Gymnasium.
The Spartans dropped the first set 25-20 and, despite five lead changes and three ties, they fell 25-22 in the second setl. Castleton came back strong in the third, breaking a tie at 18 apiece to score seven of the set's final nine points for the 25-20 win. In the final set, it was back and forth until a late run by the Fighting Tigers lifted them to a 25-22 victory.
The team was led on offense by sophomore Grace Schreiber and classmate Paige Lacey (Westerly, R.I.). Schreiber had ten kills, hit .368 and added three services while Lacey hit .208 with nine kills. Lacey also added 11 assists and seven digs.
Defensively, Castleton finished with 58 digs, led by Nicole Valastro's (So. Glens Falls, N.Y.) 14. The sophomore also finished with a team-high 18 assists. Schreiber added 12 digs while sophomore Sarah Wheeler (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and junior Alyssa Sherman (Argyle, N.Y.) each had ten.
Cobleskill improves to 4-11 with the victory while the Spartans drop to 0-10 on the season. Castleton returns to action on Saturday, Oct 1, when the team travels to Maine for matches with Maine Maritime and Husson at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
