POULTNEY, Vt. – The Castleton women's volleyball team lost a pair of contests on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision to Johnson St. and coming up short against Lyndon 3-1 on the campus of Green Mountain.
In the first match of the day the Spartans nearly captured the first set before losing by a tight 25-23 margin. They dropped sets two and three by scores of 25-21 and 25-16.
Despite the loss, the team recorded a season-high 72 digs, including a match-high 21 from sophomore Ruth Tomlinson (Huntington, Vt.). Sophomore Nicole Valastro (So. Glens Falls, N.Y.) and senior Sarah Flore (Springfield, Vt.) each added 12 while sophomore Paige Lacey (Westerly, R.I.) chipped in with 11. Sophomore Grace Schreiber (Cheshire, Conn.) hit .312 and finished the match with a team-high seven kills.
Facing Lyndon, Castleton dropped the first set 25-18 but stormed back to take the second by a dominating 25-10 margin. However, the Spartans were not able to sustain their momentum as they lost the final two sets, 25-18 and 25-15.
Tomlinson once again led the defensive effort, registering a career-high 24 digs as the team finished with 54 total. Schreiber had a team-high seven kills on the offensive end and added four service aces and a pair of solo blocks as well.
Castleton falls to 0-15, 0-5 and will play host to Southern Vermont on Thursday at 4 pm.
