CANTON, N.Y. –Ally Stearns led the Castleton women's track & field team at the Saints Ice Breaker Open at St. Lawrence University with a winning effort in the hammer throw as she achieved a NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships qualifier.
Stearns sat atop the list of 19 athletes in the event with a throw of 41.46 meters (136'0"). Iyanna Williams placed seventh with a heave of 35.57 meters (116'8"). Williams was also sixth in the discus achieving a distance of 29.17 meters (95'8").
Ashley Darrell bested her own program record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 22:22.48 to pick up a 12th-place finish in the event.
Bronwen Hopwood earned three top-four performances for Castleton on the day. She was third out of 16 in the 200-meter dash in 29.05 seconds and fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.82 seconds. She was also fourth of 13 in the long jump with a leap measuring 4.65 meters (15'3.25").
Ricki Mihulka picked up a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (14.49 seconds) and fifth in the long jump (4.53 meters, 14'10.5"). Emily Maier followed in the short spring with a time of 14.55 seconds. She also clocked in fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.01 seconds.
In the high jump, Hannah Coupas earned a second place finish out of four after clearing a height of 1.40 meters (4'7").
Castleton third as a team with 39 points. The host, St. Lawrence, earned the team title with 217 points. Plattsburgh earned second with 184 points. Herkimer County CC (20) and Potsdam (13) rounded out the team scoring.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational hosted by Fitchburg State.
