CANTON, N.Y. - Senior Bronwen Hopwood placed in the top-five in all four events in which she competed – setting the school record in two – to lead the Castleton women's indoor track and field team at the Dual Duel in Newell hosted by St. Lawrence on Saturday.
Hopwood bested her own record in the 400-meter dash with a finish of 1:03.86, nearly half of a second faster than her previous record, to finish second. She also set the school record in the long jump with a distance of 4.71 meters (15'5.5") to finish third. Elizabeth Bassette, who registered a jump of 4.65 meters in 2016, previously held the record in the event.
Hopwood also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (28.75 seconds) and sixth in the 60-meter dash (8.75 seconds).
Ally Stearns placed second in the weight throw with a regionally-qualifying distance of 13.45 meters (44'1.5"). The senior qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships previously on Dec. 1 with a throw of 13.53 meters (44'4.75").
Emily Maier was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 11.41 seconds, seventh in the long jump (4.31 meters, 4'1.75"), and 15th in the shot put (5.34 meters, 17'6.25"). Cara Cummings was the final competitor for Castleton, placing 10th in the weight throw with a distance of 9.22 meters (30'3") and 11th in the shot put (8.65 meters, 28'4.5").
Castleton is off until Jan. 12 when it competes at the Middlebury Winter Classic.
