HOLDEN, Mass. -- The Castleton University women's tennis team hit the road Thursday afternoon to take on Worchester State at Wachusett Regional High School. Despite a valiant effort, the Spartans fell to the Lancers 9-0. With the loss today, the Spartans fall to 2-8 (0-6 LEC) while the Lancers improve to 6-4 (4-2 LEC).
Starting out with doubles, the first flight of Megan Nadler and Regina Marchese fought hard but fell short, dropping an 8-0 decision to Charlotte Mullane and Emma Collins. The second flight of Emily Miller and Aliza Bogner fell 8-1 while the third flight of Alexis Curley and Grace Sharkey won three games in an 8-3 loss to Bekah Riley and Monika Mularski.
Facing a 3-0 deficit, the Spartans took the court for singles action looking to get back into the match. Nadler and Bogner both won seven games to lead the Spartans. Nadler, who competed at first singles, fell 6-1, 7-6 to Lauren Taylor while Bogner fell to Victoria Konicki 6-3, 6-4 at fifth singles.
Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans was Miller falling 6-2, 6-0 at second singles, Marchese dropping a 6-2, 6-0 decision at third singles, Sharkey losing 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles and Curley falling 6-2, 6-1 at sixth singles.
Women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, October 5 as it takes on Southern Maine in a Little East Conference matchup starting at 12 p.m.
