Spartans Overwhelm Terriers To Improve to 4-1 In NAC Play

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's tennis team defeated the visiting Thomas College Terriers 9-0 at the Castleton Courts on Sunday afternoon. Castleton improves to 7-4 overall while moving to 4-1 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Terriers fall to 2-5 and 2-3 in league action.

Castleton immediately leaped out to a 2-0 lead after its second and third doubles duos played to an 8-0 and 8-1 victory, respectively. Yet, Thomas' fight did not dissipate despite the early deficit as it battled through the first double flight matchup.

Ciara Bannister and Kirsten Kruk jumped out an early 4-1 lead over Olivia Mora and Irune Arruti Moreno. However, the visiting duo held on a grabbed back one break in the next game to bring the tally to 4-3. Over the next several games, both sides put pressure on the other, but neither was able to make an in.

Following a Bannister volley at the net, which split the pair of Terrier athletes, the Spartan duo was able to capture an 8-6 win.

In individual play, Castleton earned straight-set victories in each pairing, except second singles, which went three sets. Arruti Moreno pushed Megan Nadler by winning the middle set after a 6-0 opening set loss, but the Rutland, Vt. native powered through to grab the super tiebreak by 10-7 tally.

Emily Miller and Alexis Curley each notched double-bagel wins with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline. Meanwhile, Danarose Weaver surrendered just two games en route to a 6-1, 6-3 final.

The top doubles team went undefeated in singles play as Bannister recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win in the top individual spot, while Kruk notched a 6-1, 6-1 in the three hole.

Women's tennis returns to action for a conference road match on Wednesday. The Spartans will travel to Lyndon State for a 3:30 p.m. start.
