Women's Tennis Breezes By Visiting Husson

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans swept doubles before claiming five of six singles matches to earn an 8-1 conference victory over visiting Husson University on Saturday afternoon.

Castleton improves to 6-4 and 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference, while the Eagles fall to 4-2 and suffer their first league loss (3-1) at the Castleton Courts.

Following a pair of wins at second and third singles, Ciara Bannister and Kirsten Kruk took a major stride toward the overall victory in the top team spot. The duo was able to outlast the Eagles' team of Sarah Smith and Charlotte Bednarz in extra play by a score of 9-7. Bannister and Kruk improve to 5-3 on the year in the number one doubles position.

In singles competition, Megan Nadler continued her impressive season by getting another victory under her belt. The Rutland, Vt. native moved to 9-1 with a comprehensive straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win against Bednarz.

Meanwhile, in the top spot, Bannister snapped a two-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Husson's Smith. Emily Miller, Alexis Curley and Kruk also earned individual wins.

The Eagles lone point came at fifth singles where Samantha Dubay battled with Castleton's Danarose Weaver before coming away with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph.

Women's tennis returns to the courts at 11 a.m. on Sunday. They will wrap up their conference weekend doubleheader by hosting Thomas College.
