Hanover, N.H. – The Castleton women's tennis team earned a 5-3 victory over the Thomas Terriers in the NEAC East semifinals on Saturday morning. The Spartans will face top seed Colby-Sawyer in the NEAC East championship, in a rematch of last year's title tussle.
Castleton jumped out to an early lead, taking two of the three doubles matches against Thomas. Chelsea Crehan (Essex, Conn.) and Sara Novenstern (Chappaqua, N.Y.) teamed at second doubles to deliver a tightly-contended 8-6 victory. At third doubles, Meghan Susslin and Lauren Fedorka were dominant on their way to an 8-4 win.
The Spartans went on to take three singles matches, including a three-set thriller at the third singles flight. Fedorka faced off with Thomas' Tyler Ventura. Fedorka won her first set in a 7-6 tiebreaker before dropping the second 4-6. With the score tied and the Spartans in need of a victory to seal the match, Fedorka dominated the third set, winning 6-3, and propelled the Spartans to a victory and a date in the championship.
Castleton improves to 8-8 on the year and faces Colby-Sawyer at 2:30 pm on Saturday for the NEAC East title.
