HANOVER, N.H. – The Castleton Spartans' women's tennis team fell to Colby-Sawyer College 5-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Championship on Saturday afternoon.
In a rematch of last season's championship contest, the Chargers were able to claim their first NEAC East Championship crown in convincing fashion. Colby-Sawyer improves to 16-2 and will face the NEAC West Division champion for the right to play in the NCAA tournament. The West Division champion will be decided in the spring. Castleton ends their fall season at 8-9.
The Chargers took a 3-0 lead in the match after sweeping doubles play. Lauren Fedorka (Temple, N.H.) and Meghan Susslin (St. Albans, Vt.) were the only team able to take a game from Colby-Sawyer, falling to Charlotte Horton (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Oxana Tkachenko (Lviv, Ukraine) 8-2 in the third doubles flight.
Colby-Sawyer, needing just two points to claim the championship, clinched the title with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Liz Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.), the tournament's MVP, defeated Olga McIntyre (Winhall, Vt.) at the top flight. Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) finished the match with a win over Felicia West (Rutland, Vt.) at second singles.
Lincoln, Ramsay, and the Spartans' Fedorka were named to the All-Tournament team. Fedorka sealed the victory in the semifinal match for Castleton with a three-set win at the third singles flight.
