BOSTON –The Castleton University women's soccer team lost a 3-0 game at UMass Boston on Saturday.
With the defeat, the Spartans fall to 4-3-0 and 1-1-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) play. The Beacons improve to 6-2-0 (1-0-0 LEC) with their conference-opening victory.
Grace McGettrick, Kaylee Haynes, and Grace Oliver scored one goal apiece for the hosts. Meanwhile, Mary Jo Murphy, Morgan Palma, and Allie Crawford each assisted on a goal.
UMass Boston out-shot Castleton, 21-6, as Ryle Nichols was the only Spartan to record multiple shot attempts. Makenzi Bellando registered the first shot of the contest when her attempt just 19 seconds into regulation was stopped by Beacon goalkeeper, Maria Spylios.
Spylios made four saves to pick up her sixth win of the season. Miranda Smith played the final 21 minutes in goal without incident. Loren Henderson surrendered three goals and made six saves in the effort for Castleton.
McGettrick scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to put UMass Boston up 1-0 just 4:20 into the contest. The Beacons made it 2-0 with 1:29 remaining in the first half thanks to Haynes' first career goal. Then, Oliver completed the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 52:51 mark.
In addition to the large edge in shots, the Beacons walked away with a favorable 14-0 margin in corner kicks.
Castleton will face two-time defending national champion Williams College on the road on Sunday with kickoff set for 12:00 p.m.
