PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Castleton University women's soccer team opened its 2019 season with a 2-1 defeat at Plattsburgh in non-conference action on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Tatum Shappy scored the lone goal for the Spartans for her first-career tally. Making a tackle at midfield, she took the ball and carried it on a 2-on-0 with Makenzi Bellando before electing to shoot from nine yards out and scoring with 3:58 remaining in the first half.
The Spartans carried a 1-0 advantage into the break, but the Cardinals knotted it at one 11:22 into the second half. After earning a penalty kick, Rachael Moran delivered a strike stopped by Loren Henderson, but Moran collected the rebound and fired a strike past the Spartan keeper for the equalizer.
After back-and-forth action for the next several minutes of play, Kirsten Villemaire earned a penalty kick at 73:47 after streaking through the right side. Her low strike found the back of the net and served as the game-winning goal.
Henderson made 10 saves in the effort and stayed active in cutting off Plattsburgh centering attempts in the box. Julia Ennis picked up the win in goal for the Cardinals after making six saves. Plattsburgh out-shot Castleton 25-12 including a 12-7 edge in shots on goal.
Castleton's best chance to even it back up came with just over a minute and a half remaining in regulation. Rylee Nichols' hard strike found the target but Ennis managed to knock it away. The Spartans proceeded to earn back-to-back corner kicks but were not able to generate a scoring chance.
Castleton returns to action in its home-opener on Sunday at Dave Wolk Stadium for a 1 p.m. matchup with Norwich.
