KEENE, N.H. – Goals by four different players and stellar defense led the Castleton University women's soccer team past the Keene State Owls – 4-0 – on Saturday afternoon at Owl Stadium.
Castleton improves to 7-10, extending its winning streak to four games. The Spartans also pick up two key conference points as they move to 4-3-0 in the Little East. Keene State falls to 4-10-1 and 0-6-1.
Playing competitively through the first half, Castleton scored three times in the latter 45 to run away with the match. Getting the Spartans on the board in the 27th minute, Taylor Mann took a through-ball from Julia Carone and put in in the twine.
The likely hero and reigning LEC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, Makenzi Bellando added to the Spartan lead in the 65th minute with her 10th goal of the season. Off of a pass from the initial goal scorer – Mann – Bellando was able to beat the keeper and increase the Castleton lead to 2-0.
Just over a minute later, Julia Carone and Rylee Nichols paired up to make it 3-0 Spartans. Carone later assisted on the final score of the evening as Natasha Silva put the ball into the goal with help from the former and Hannah Coupas.
While Castleton was in the lead for a majority of the game, it was fairly balanced offensively as the Spartans had a narrow 12-8 advantage in shots. The corner kick tally was split evenly at 3-3.
Loren Henderson earned the win in goal for Castleton as she made two saves in her 90 minutes of play. She picks up her seventh win of the year and recorded her third shutout.
Women's soccer returns to action as it heads out on the road to face former conference opponent Colby-Sawyer at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
