ALBANY, N.Y. – Falling victim to a late first-half goal, the Castleton University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest to the Sage Colleges Gators at the ACP Athletic Facility on Sunday afternoon.
Following the hard-fought loss, Castleton drops to 0-2 on the young season, while the Sage Colleges improve to 2-0.
Castleton battled throughout, despite not having success getting the ball past the opposing keeper. In the early going, Rylee Nichols and Julia Carone attacked the zone taking four shots combined over an eight-minute stretch. Each attempted was stymied by Sage goalie Natalie Tidings.
Fifteen minutes later, the Spartans applied pressure putting back-to-back shots on Tidings just 16 seconds apart, but to no avail.
During the second half, Castleton continued to push the pace, powering into the opposing zone with five more shots. Mickaela Buzzy – the goalie replacement at the half – was equally as dominant as her teammate, stopping every Spartan attack.
The lone goal in the game was scored in the 42nd minute as the Gators' Joleen Marfone followed up a Hallie Klosterman corner from the right side with a tap in.
Spartan goalie Loren Henderson fell to 0-2 on the season despite a very strong showing. She made five saves on six shots during 90 minutes of play.
Women's soccer returns to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as it travels to Westfield, Mass. to take on the Owls of Westfield State. In 2017, the two teams battled to a double-overtime 1-1 draw.
