Spartans Host Keene State in Regular-Season Finale

CASTLETON, Vt. – Coming off a pair of conference victories over the weekend, the Castleton women's soccer team (9-7-1, 8-1 NAC) is set to wrap up its regular season at home Wednesday night with a non-conference match against Keene State (9-7, 4-2 LEC) at 6 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.

Castleton earned a 5-2 victory over Maine Maritime on Saturday behind two goals each from freshmen Rylee Nichols and Julia Carone. After the Mariners scored first, Makenzi Bellando netted the game-tying goal to spark a rally of four unanswered goals as the Spartans pulled away in the second half. Less than 24 hours later, Nichols scored once more and Dallas Brodhead tallied the game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes left in regulation as the Spartans defeated Husson, 2-1, on Sunday to clinch the No. 2 seed in the North Atlantic Conference Tournament.

The Spartans are averaging 2.71 goals per game offensively. Nichols leads the squad with 28 points on 13 goals and two assists. Bellando has eight goals and five assists for 21 points, while Carone has 17 points on seven goals and three assists. Bronwen Hopwood leads the team with six assists and she has added five goals for 16 total points.

Defensively, Kiley Baran has been strong in goal with 50 saves in 12 starts. Baran is 9-3 on the season with a 0.97 goals-against average paired with a .820 save percentage. The senior has three shutouts on the year.

Keene State enters the mid-week matchup with a 9-7 overall mark after overpowering Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College, 7-2, last Saturday. Taylor Farland recorded a hat trick with three goals and added an assist to lead the Owls offensively.

With 42 total goals on the season, the Owls are averaging 2.63 goals per game offensively. Katie Silegy has started all 16 games and leads the team in goals (8), assists (5), and points (21). Farland has 18 points on seven goals and four assists, while Julia Pearson has four goals and three assists for 11 total points.

Shelby Offord has made 10 starts in goal and holds a 1.58 goals-against average to go with a .762 save percentage on the season. Offord is 4-3 with three shutouts and 48 saves in 855 minutes between the pipes. Abbie Terrinca has made nine appearances in goal and is 4-4 with a 1.61 goals-against average and .792 save percentage in over 615 minutes.

This will be the first matchup between the two future Little East Conference opponents since 2013. Keene State defeated Castleton, 4-0, on its home pitch in the most recent contest.
