Women's Soccer Opens Three-Game Road Trip Wednesday

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton women's soccer team (0-2-1) opens a three-game road trip Wednesday night when it faces MCLA (0-2) in a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.

Castleton is still searching for its first victory of the season after falling to Wheaton, 2-1, last Saturday. A goal on each side just 27 seconds apart in the second half kept the score even down the stretch, but Wheaton prevailed with the game-winning goal in the 79th minute. Makenzi Bellando tallied her first goal of the season for the Spartans.

Bellando and Julia Carone have tallied the Spartan goals through their first three matches of the season. The Spartans are averaging just over seven shots per game on the offensive end. Rachel Keefer is tied for the team-lead with five shots overall, while Bronwen Hopwood has also drilled two shots on goal thus far.

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Shambo had an impressive first career start against Wheaton, making 11 saves in the hard-fought defeat. Shambo has 12 saves on the season and has allowed just two goals in 110 minutes between the pipes, good for a .857 save percentage.

MCLA enters the match also looking for its first win of the season with 1-0 and 3-0 losses to Rivier and Sage, respectively. The Trailblazers are still looking to find the back of the net, despite averaging 15 shots per match. Lauren Mangiardi leads the offensive unit with five shots, while Brooke Mangiardi, Caitlyn Maloney, and Britt Whitford have also put two shots on goal thus far.

Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Richardson has played all 180 minutes of action in goal this season. Richardson has nine saves and is allowing two goals per match for a .692 save percentage.

The Spartans have defeated MCLA in three consecutive years, outscoring the Trailblazers 5-1 over that span, including back-to-back 1-0 shutouts the past two seasons.
