Women's Alpine Wins Eastern Regional GS Championship

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – The Castleton University women's alpine ski team swept the podium to earn its second-consecutive United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association Eastern Regional Championship in the giant slalom on Saturday afternoon, besting the field by more than nine seconds to claim the top spot at Sugarloaf Mountain.

The Spartans posted a team time of 5:34.66 with four racers in the top 10, including individual champion Karoline Rettenbacher. The University of Connecticut finished second on the day with a time of 5:43.75, while Babson rounded out the top three with a time of 5:48.29.

Rettenbacher, the ECSC MacConnell Division Skier and Rookie of the Year, posted the two fastest runs of the day to claim the top spot on the podium with a total time of 1:50.05. Lena Soehnle clocked in at 1:52.25 to finish second overall, while Linn Ljungemo finished third with a time of 1:52.36 after posting the third-best second run of the day.

Kylie Mackie finished sixth for the Spartans at 1:54.28, and Kirsten Kruk rounded out the Spartan competitors with a 12th-place time of 1:55.98.

The Spartans wrap up the Regional Championships on Sunday with the slalom.
