CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton Women's Skiing looks for its first win of the season this weekend when it competes in the giant slalom and slalom on the slopes of Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, N.Y.
The Spartans have been one of the top teams in the ECSC MacConnell Division so far, with four second-place finishes already this year. The squad delivered a pair of strong performances on West Mountain last weekend, finishing just behind Brown in both the GS and slalom and having, at least, three competitors post top-20 finishes in each event.
The freshman duo of Linn Ljungemo and Anna-Julia Storch has paced the Castleton squad this season. In the GS event at West, Storch posted a third-place finish in 1:47.34, while Ljungemo trailed just 0.09 seconds behind in fourth. They were just as impressive in the slalom, as Ljungemo placed fourth overall in 1:50.20 and Storch came home in 7th in 1:51.44. Simona Croccolo has posted top-20 finishes in all four events this year, including an 11th-place finish in the slalom at West, while Lisa Davis has placed among the squad's top-four finishers in three of the four events so far.
Castleton currently sits second in the ECSC MacConnell Division standings, just four points behind Brown, who has won every event so far. Babson stands third overall with 15 points after four races, followed by UConn in fourth.
Last year, the Spartans had one of their most successful weekends of the season at Whiteface, posting runner-up finishes in both the GS and slalom events. Croccolo tallied respective finishes of third and 11th overall in the GS and slalom events to lead the squad, while Davis posted a pair of top-15 finishes, including a 13th-place finish in the GS with a time of 2:08.94.
