Program Scoring Record Set in Tight Loss to Open the Season

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Castleton University Rugby team fell on the road at Long Island University Post by the score of 34-26 to open the 2018 season on Sunday.

The Spartans held the lead throughout the game, but the Pioneers scored two tries in the final 3:11 of play to overtake the lead in the closing minutes.

Kailyn Duff led Castleton offensively. She scored one try and went 3-for-4 on post-try conversion attempts.

Castleton came out strong, scoring two tries within the first five minutes of play. After a pair of Post tries that tied the match at 12, Mary Bovaconti broke the tie on the final play of the first half, and the Spartans went into the break with a seven-point lead.

Mikaela Phillips ran in a try with 11:08 remaining in regulation, and Castleton led by nine following Duff's third and final successful conversion that followed.

The Pioneers overtook the lead with just over three minutes remaining and put the game away with an insurance try with 1:23 remaining.

Amber Wright led the way for LIU Post. She ran a pair of tries in and converted twice. Calah Turpin scored two tries in the second half for the Pioneers.

The Spartans will return to action for their home opener at Alumni Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday against the University of New England.
