CASTLETON, Vt. – Despite holding No. 4 Norwich University to just five points in the second half along with a Savanah Graves try, the Castleton University women's rugby team fell 34-5 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Castleton wraps up the season with a 0-8-1 record, while Norwich moves to 6-2. The Cadets will continue to play in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association playoffs with the first round scheduled for Nov. 11. The top four teams will then head to Quinnipiac University for the semifinal and final games.
Norwich began the scoring, notching almost all of its points in the first quarter. Less than 30 seconds into the game, Norwich was able to break through a bunch of tackles and take it the distance. The Cadets would follow that up with three more successful try attempts, which included a couple of conversions.
Scoring once more in the second and third quarters, Norwich extended its lead to 34-0. Throughout the contest both sides played a very stingy brand of defense, making stops on both sides of the field to keep the score the same.
Sierra Ostrow-Remy continued to play well for Castleton, notching a couple of long runs. At the 15:05 mark of the fourth period, Graves got the Spartans on the board. Part of a consistent team effort of passes and pickups, Graves was able to break through to notch the score. Julia May assisted her in the effort.
