WORCESTER, Mass. – After a dominant showing at the New England Wrestling Association Dual Championships, and against Rhode Island College and SUNY-Oswego a week ago, Castleton wrestler Michael Gonyea has been named the New England Wrestling Association Rookie of the Week.
The freshman out of Albany, New York, went 5-0 at the 133-pound weight class, including a 3-0 mark at the NEWA Duals. Gonyea ranks ninth in the nation at 133 and is 32-2 on the season with 11 wins via fall and five technical fall victories.
He is the first individual recognized with a weekly accolade this season for the Spartans, and the first since Max Tempel was named Wrestler of the Week a season ago.
Castleton returns to the mat on Saturday afternoon at the Johnson & Wales Quad.
