GORHAM, Maine – The Castleton University wrestling squad picked up its second win in as many days on Saturday afternoon, holding off a late comeback attempt from the University of Southern Maine to claim a 21-19 victory.
The Spartans sit at 6-6 in dual competition on the season following the win, and claimed victories at six of the 10 weight classes.
Michael Gonyea registered the Spartans' first win of the day at the 133-pound class, winning via decision, 8-4, to make the score 6-3 in favor of USM. Max Tempel leveled things at 6-6 with a decision victory, 4-1, at the 141.
After the Huskies claimed a win via major decision at the 149, Reece Millington pinned the opposition in 1:26 to give the Spartans their first lead of the day, 12-10. Cameron Milliken and Chance LaPier followed that up with victories via decision to push the lead to 18-10.
USM cut the lead to just two points with a win via fall at 184, but Mitchell LaFlam earned a decision victory, 6-4, at the 197 to push the lead to 21-16 going into the final match. Jesse Webb battled tough at 285 for the Spartans, falling via decision—though it was enough for Castleton to hold on for a 21-19 victory.
