WORCESTER, Mass. – The Castleton University wrestling program posted a 1-2 mark on Saturday afternoon at the WPI Duals, downing SUNY Oneonta 20-19 while falling to No. 25 Coast Guard and No. 5 Wabash.
Max Tempel posted a 3-0 afternoon for the Spartans at the 141 pound class, while Frank Darwak worked to a 2-0 mark at the 125 and Michael Gonyea was 2-1 at the 133. The Spartans sit at 4-6 in dual matches on the season after the day, though all six losses have come against nationally-ranked opponents.
Castleton jumped out to a quick start in the opening match of the day against Coast Guard, winning each of the first three matches to take a 14-0 edge behind major decisions by Darwak, 11-0, and Tempel, 12-2, with a victory by forfeit for Gonyea mixed in. Coast Guard stormed back with wins in each of the final seven weight classes to claim victory, 37-14.
In the second match of the day against SUNY Oneonta, Castleton again got on the board early with wins by Darwak, Gonyea and Tempel. Darwak opened the dual with an 11-0 major decision, before Gonyea won 19-0 via technical fall. Tempel took out his opponent in the first sudden victory period to put Castleton up 12-0. After a loss via decision in the 149-pound bout, Daniel Haverty got Castleton back on the board with a 21-4 win via technical fall and Cameron Milliken claimed a win at the 165-pound class with a 9-3 win by decision, putting the Spartans up 20-3. Oneonta continued to pressure the Spartans, winning each of the final four bouts, though it wasn't enough as Castleton claimed the match with a 20-19 edge.
The final match of the day pitted Castleton against fifth-ranked Wabash, a match the Little Giants claimed 43-3. The Spartans' only victory in the match came from Tempel in the 141-pound class as he picked up a win via decision, 11-6.
The Spartans return to the mat on Friday when they travel to Henniker, N.H., for a battle with New England College. The first match is slated for 7 p.m.
