CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – After losses to Ithaca (31-10) and LIU-Post (32-12) earlier in the day, Castleton University rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Sacred Heart University, 24-19, Saturday in the Journeymen Northeast Collegiate Duals held at Shen High School.
Sacred Heart scored the first 10 points before the two teams exchanged pinfall victories, with Castleton's Max Tempel earning the fall for the Spartans at 149 pounds. At 165 pounds, Jared Costa earned his own pinfall victory to cut the Castleton deficit to four at 16-12.
After the Pioneers earned a decision victory at 174 pounds, Castleton won the final three matches of the meet, starting with decision victories by Mitchell LaFlam at 184 pounds and Cedrick Stephens at 197 pounds. Jesse Webb clinched the victory for the Spartans with a pinfall victory right before the end of the first period.
Tempel and Stephens also earned victories against Ithaca earlier Saturday, as did Frank Darwak at 125 pounds with a 13-11 decision. Against LIU Post, CJ Schultz picked up a pinfall victory at 133 pounds just 1:49 into the match, but the Pioneers won eight of 10 matches to earn the dual meet win.
The Castleton University wrestling team heads to Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y., for the Journeymen Collegiate Classic Sunday, Nov. 12, starting at 9 a.m.
