BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference battle to the University of New England on Sunday afternoon, falling 20-6 after a flurry of goals by the Nor'easters in the second half at UNE's Blue Bolt Field.
Castleton (1-3) trailed by just three goals at the halftime break, but UNE (3-3) picked up the intensity with 13 second-half goals to pull away for the victory.
The Nor'easters outshot Castleton 39-15 on the afternoon and turned it over 29 times to the Spartans' 36. Both sides won 14 draw controls, while Castleton held a 30-26 edge in ground balls on the day. Castleton was 10-for-22 on clear attempts, while UNE was successful on 15-of-23 clear opportunities. Both sides notched a pair of free-position scores.
Emma Best led the way for the Spartans with a three-point day, scoring twice and adding an assist while earning three draw controls. Morgan Derosia had a multi-point day with a goal and an assist, while Abbie Lesure netted her third goal of the week while Aubra Linn scored her first career goal and Megan Krumm potted her second score of the young campaign. Samantha Hebb stopped five shots with 11 goals against in 33 minutes of action to suffer the loss. Raven Payne played 27 minutes, making one save for the Spartans.
Molly Camelo posted seven points on five goals and two assists for UNE, while Casey Conwell and Nichole Carvalho had three goals and three assists apiece. Taylor Hopkins earned the win with three saves in 45 minutes of action before giving way to Katie Babineau in goal.
UNE opened the scoring less than three minutes into action as Camelo netted her first goal of the game on a free-position shot, but Linn evened the score at 1-1 just 33 seconds later when she finished off a pass from Derosia. The Nor'easters then rattled off a three-goal run to go up 4-1 before Lesure stopped the bleeding with a goal. After Camelo's third goal of the game put UNE up 5-2, Castleton scored a pair of quick goals off the sticks of Krumm and Derosia to pull within one, 5-4. That was as close as the Spartans would come, as Camelo scored twice more before the half to send UNE into the break leading 7-4.
The Nor'easters came out in the second half firing, scoring four times in the first five minutes of the stanza before eventually pushing the lead to 15-4, marking 10 unanswered goals dating back to the first half. Best stopped the run with a free-position goal, her first of the game, but UNE rattled off three more scores before Best found the back of the cage once more. The Nor'easters scored twice more before the final horn to push the margin to 20-6.
Castleton returns to the turf on Wednesday evening with its home-opener against UMaine-Farmington. The opening draw is slated for 6 p.m.
