WATERVILLE, Maine – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team swept the North Atlantic Conference weekly awards, as Erin Shuttle was named NAC Player of the Week and Emma Best received both NAC Defensive Player of the Week and NAC Rookie of the Week honors, announced Monday by the league office.
After scoring a goal last Wednesday against Plymouth State, Shuttle led the Spartans with five goals in Saturday's 16-7 victory over Husson. Shuttle scored the first goal of the game 56 seconds into the contest, followed by her second goal of the day with 5:17 remaining in the first half to give Castleton the lead for good.
Shuttle's other three goals came in the second half, including two within 2:41 of each other as part of Castleton's 7-0 scoring run in the first 12 minutes of the second half. It was Shuttle's third five-goal game of the season, plus she collected a season-high four ground balls during the contest.
For the season, Shuttle is fourth in the NAC with 34 goals and fifth in the league with 40 total points. This is Shuttle's second Player of the Week award of the season, with the first coming on March 12, and the third of her career.
Best continues to contribute to Castleton's success in several ways, earning the first free position goal of her career to go along with three ground balls and three draw controls last Wednesday against Plymouth State.
Saturday at Husson, Best notched her first career hat trick, finishing with three goals along with one assist, four ground balls, six draw controls, and five caused turnovers to help the Spartans defeat the Eagles. After scoring early in the first half to give Castleton a 2-0 lead, she scored consecutive goals to pull the Spartans into a 4-4 tie as she started a 4-0 scoring stretch.
Best has started all 11 games for the Spartans, earning 10 goals and four assists so far this season. In addition, she is second in the NAC in both ground balls with 42 and caused turnovers with 23, plus she is fifth in the league in draw controls with 49. Best becomes the fourth different Spartan to receive Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, plus she earns her second Rookie of the Week award of 2018.
Castleton, 5-6 overall but 3-0 within the NAC, continues its pursuit of another conference title with home games against Thomas Saturday, April 14, at 3:30 p.m. and Lyndon Sunday, April 15, at 2 p.m. Saturday is Senior Day at Spartan Stadium, while Sunday is One Love Awareness Day.
