CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team will play four of its next five games at home, starting Saturday, March 31, against Maine Maritime Academy at Spartan Stadium beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The Spartans, 3-5 overall, saw their two-game winning streak snapped with a 16-5 loss at Keene State Tuesday night. Castleton extended its streak of consecutive North Atlantic Conference regular season victories to 47 with a 17-9 victory over Colby-Sawyer last Saturday.
Erin Shuttle scored two goals Tuesday and is now third in the NAC with 26 goals as well as fourth in the league with 30 total points. Emily Cross also scored twice against the Owls and is now tied for first in the NAC with 15 assists, third in the conference with 36 total points, and fifth in the league with 21 goals. Samantha Hebb made 11 saves to move atop the league rankings in total saves with 81, plus she is third in the NAC in save percentage (.466) and fifth in the league in goals against average (11.75).
Maine Maritime is 2-2 overall, including 1-1 within the NAC, after a 10-7 victory over Maine-Farmington Wednesday. As a team, the Mariners are averaging 8.3 goals, 20.0 shots, 22.0 ground balls, 9.3 draw controls, and 9.3 caused turnovers per game.
Sydney Adams and Shelby O'Neil lead the Mariners on offense with 11 goals and one assist for 12 total points apiece. O'Neil also leads the team with 17 draw controls. Morgan Libby has collected a team-high 19 ground balls and eight caused turnovers so far this season. Christina Wilson has played every second in net for the Mariners, posting a 9.00 goals against average and a .526 save percentage with 40 total saves.
This is the fourth meeting all-time between Castleton and Maine Maritime, with the Spartans winning the previous three contests by a combined score of 56-12. Last season in Castine, Maine, the Spartans scored the first nine goals of the game on their way to an 18-4 victory. Tiffany Danyow led the Spartans with four goals and three assists, while Tori Cooper had the only multiple-point game for the Mariners with one goal and one assist.
After Saturday, Castleton remains home for a non-conference contest against Plymouth State Wednesday, April 4, at 4 p.m., followed by a trip to Bangor, Maine, to take on Husson Saturday, April 7, at 1:30 p.m.
