GENEVA, N.Y. – Castleton University lost to Westfield State University, 15-8, Saturday afternoon in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Boswell Field on the campus of William Smith College.
Tiffany Danyow led the Spartans with three goals and one assist, while fellow seniors Ashley Pelkey and Chantel Wilkin as well as junior Nadine Downing earned one goal and one assist apiece. Castleton goalie Samantha Hebb tied her career high with 17 saves as she attempted to keep the Spartans close.
Westfield State (14-5) took the early advantage with three goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Castleton finally broke through with 22:04 remaining in the first half as Downing found Emily Cross for her 32nd goal of the season.
After the Owls scored with 17:01 left in the first half to increase their lead back to three, Erin Shuttle grabbed her own rebound and notched her 22nd goal of the season to close the Spartan deficit back to two. Westfield State once again extended the lead to three, but Danyow scored an unassisted goal with 10:59 remaining in the half to close the Owl lead to 5-3.
The Owls once again scored three unanswered goals to widen their advantage to 8-3, but Castleton responded late in the half, as Danyow set up Downing for a goal with 25 seconds left before halftime. Just over two minutes into the second half, Westfield State once again established a five-goal lead with a tally by Syd Lambert.
Lambert's goal started Westfield State's third three-goal run of the game over the first four minutes of the second half. Wilkin snapped the Owl streak with a goal assisted by Pelkey exactly five minutes into the second half, and then Danyow scored seven minutes later to close the Spartan deficit to 11-6.
Westfield State solidified its victory by scoring four goals over the final 16 minutes, while Danyow completed her hat trick and Wilkin assisted on Pelkey's goal late in the contest. The Owls outshot the Spartans, 48-15, and collected more ground balls, 33-23.
Brooke Williams led Westfield State with three goals and two assists, while Elizabeth Navoni also notched a hat trick. Maria Woodall started in net for the Owls and made two saves, while Alanah Melanson played the second half and made three saves.
Castleton concludes the 2017 season with a 12-7 overall record, featuring its sixth straight North Atlantic Conference title and NCAA Tournament appearance.
