JOHNSON, Vt. – Every active field player for Castleton University scored at least one goal as the Spartans cruised to a 24-2 victory over Johnson State Thursday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse game at Minaert Field.
Grace Johnson started the scoring just 16 seconds into the game, followed by a goal by Emily Cross with one minute gone off an assist by Hannah Braman. Johnson assisted on Tiffany Danyow's first goal of the game 46 seconds later, and then Ashley Pelkey scored three of Castleton's next five goals for a hat trick. In total, the Spartans scored 16 goals in the first half and eight goals in the second half.
Danyow led Castleton with four goals and two assists in the match, her seventh four-goal game of the season, while Erin Shuttle also scored four goals, a season high. Pelkey finished with three goals, six ground balls, and seven draw controls, and Johnson earned two goals, one assist, and five draw controls.
Sabrina Hosner collected two goals, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers, and Kirsten Kruk added two goals and two ground balls. Braman and Megan Wood each dished out two assists to go along with one goal apiece. In net, Samantha Hebb played the first 30 minutes and made three saves before Bria Willis replaced her and earned one save in the second half.
Johnson State (0-8, 0-6 NAC) broke the shutout with 4:55 remaining in the second half when Nichole Weeks converted a free position shot, and then she scored again with 1:19 left in the game. Naomi Quad made her second start as the Badger goalie, collecting seven saves during the afternoon.
Castleton (7-6, 7-0 NAC) heads to New London, N.H., for a key conference contest at Colby-Sawyer College Saturday, April 22, at 12 noon. The Spartans then close out the regular season with home games against Green Mountain Monday, April 24, at 4 p.m., and Worcester State Thursday, April 27, at 7 p.m.
