CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton University put together another high-scoring effort Sunday afternoon, defeating Maine-Farmington 17-4 in a North Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse match at Spartan Stadium.
Junior Emily Cross enjoyed a career day, scoring five goals and earning four assists for nine totals points. For the sixth time this season, Tiffany Danyow scored four goals in a single game, plus she dished out three assists to tie her career high with seven points. Grace Johnson picked up her fifth hat trick of the season with three goals, and Ashley Pelkey contributed two goals and two assists.
Cross set up Danyow for the first goal of the game just 1:37 into the contest, and then Danyow assisted on Pelkey's consecutive goals to give Castleton a 3-0 lead. Johnson and Cross alternated goals during the next four minutes before Cross assisted on Danyow's second goal of the game midway through the first half.
The Spartans slowly pulled away as the afternoon went along, led by Cross with three goals and two assists during the second half. Bre Babiarz scored her third goal of the season, her first in front of the home crowd, with 12 seconds left in the first half, and Nicolle Trivino scored her second goal in as many days to close out the scoring in the second half.
Maine-Farmington (4-3, 2-2 NAC) depended on Rhi Jackson for its offense, as she scored all four goals for the Beavers, plus she collected four ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Carly Raymond also earned four draw controls for the Beavers, while Castleton's Nadine Downing led all players with seven draw controls.
Castleton goalie Samantha Hebb was challenged in the first half but made three of her four saves before halftime. Bria Willis took over for Hebb with 12:27 remaining in the game and earned one save. Samantha Bickford played the entire game in net for Maine-Farmington and finished with eight saves.
Both teams continue their conference play this week, with Maine-Farmington heading to Waterville, Maine, to face Maine Maritime Wednesday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
Castleton (5-6, 5-0 NAC) now hosts Lyndon State at Spartan Stadium this Wednesday, April 12, starting at 7 p.m.
