CASTINE, Maine – The Castleton University women's lacrosse team started the 2017 North Atlantic Conference schedule the same way it has gone through the previous 39 regular season league matches, defeating Maine Maritime 18-4 Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
Castleton scored the first nine goals of the game, as Emily Cross tallied 58 seconds into the contest and scored twice during the first 16 minutes, as did Tiffany Danyow and Grace Johnson. After Maine Maritime's Tori Cooper scored on a free position shot, the Spartans scored the final four goals of the first half, including two goals by Bre Babiarz as well as a goal and an assist from Danyow.
Maine Maritime (2-1, 1-1 NAC) picked up goals by Shelby O'Neil and Briana Obshatkin in the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the second half, but Castleton pulled away by scoring five of the final six goals of the match. Cross led the way for the Spartans with a goal and an assist, with tallies also coming from Johnson, Danyow, Ashley Pelkey, and Hannah Braman.
Danyow once again led the Spartans with four goals and three assists for seven total points, while Cross, Johnson, and Pelkey each earned a hat trick with three goals apiece. Johnson also collected eight draw controls, Nadine Downing led Castleton with four ground balls, and Spartan goalie Samantha Hebb finished with eight saves as she earned the first victory of her collegiate career.
Cooper led Maine Maritime with one goal and one assist as four different Mariners accounted for the team's four goals. Sierra James made four saves in net for Maine Maritime.
Castleton (1-4, 1-0 NAC) finally plays a home game, hosting New England College Wednesday, March 29, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
