Auer Reaches Milestone as Spartans Win
Castleton, Vt. - Kate Auer notched her 100th career goal as the Spartans earned a 15-3 win over North Atlantic Conference rival Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday night at Spartan Stadium. Auer became the eighth Spartan in the past ten years to reach the 100-goal milestone.
Auer's historic goal was one of four one the night. She added an assist to lead the Spartan offense alongside Brandi Whittemore, who tallied five goals on the evening. Kim Gosselin scored a goal and dished off a game-high four assists, registering five points on the night. Caitlyn Whearty notched all three of the Colby-Sawyer goals but couldn't carry the load in the loss.
Aside from her scoring, Brandi Whittemore also tallied nine ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Spartans, leading the team in both categories. Auer and Blake Wardwell each caused four turnovers as well, with Auer leading the team with eight draw controls. Sara Berry forced a game-high six caused turnovers for the Chargers and scooped up four ground balls.
Meghan Els earned the win in net for the Spartans, making three saves and allowing one goal in the first half. Rachel Bombardier checked into the game at halftime and made six saves while allowing two goals for the Spartans. Kellie Lander took the loss for the Chargers, but put forth a solid effort in net, making 10 saves.
The Chargers played tight defense in the first half, limiting the Spartan offense to just five goals. Castleton was able to manage a pair of early goals to take a 2-0 lead. Mark buried a goal 6:32 into the game, followed by a goal from Brianna MacKay 2:02 later.
Caitlyn Whearty responded to the Spartans' offense with a goal to put the Chargers on the board and cut the Castleton lead in half. With 18:38 left in the first half, Whearty buried a score to make it 2-1. The midfielder beat a Spartan defender and slipped a shot past Els to score.
The Spartans were held scoreless for the next 14:30, but tallied three goals in the final 4:08 to take a 5-1 lead into the halftime break. Jennilee Mark broke the scoreless streak with a tally at the 4:08 mark, and Brandi Whittemore buried a pair of scores in the final minute to make it 5-1 at the half.
It didn't take long for the Spartans to get on the board out of the halftime break. Kate Auer won the opening draw control, sprinted past a pack of Chargers and buried her first goal of the game in 11 seconds to make it 6-1. Whittemore made it 7-1 just 26 seconds later.
With 28:31 remaining in the game Kate Auer stepped into the Castleton history books with her 100th career goal. The junior attacker beat Lander off a pass from Jennilee Mark to reach the century-mark in career goals and put the Spartans ahead 8-1.
The celebration was short-lived for the Spartans though as Colby-Sawyer responded with a pair of quick goals. Caitlyn Whearty scored back-to-back goals to cut the Castleton lead down to 8-3 with 24:46 left in the game.
The Chargers' surge only seemed to light the Castleton fire as the Spartans quickly shut down any hopes of a Colby-Sawyer comeback with seven straight goals to close out the game, giving the Spartans a 15-3 victory.
With the win, Castleton moves to 4-6 on the season and maintains their perfect NAC record, improving their mark to 3-0. The Spartans will return to action with a pair of road games, heading to Thomas on Saturday, April 12 and New England College on Wednesday, April 16.
