Spartans Roll to Victory against NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Spartans increased their winning streak to four games, improving to 5-7 overall with a 17-5 victory over North Atlantic Conference foe New England College on Saturday afternoon in Henniker.

Amanda Flodstrom netted a game-high five goals for the visiting Spartans while senior Jessica Taplin notched three assists on the day. Kelsey McDonald turned away seven shots in net, garnering the win.

Castleton opened the scoring just one minute into regulation as Kate Auer converted on a free-position shot.  The Spartans jumped ahead 2-0 just one minute later when Maria Lesure put in a pass from Taplin.

NEC got on the board at the 25:51 as senior Meredith Merce scored her 19th goal of the season assisted by Gabriella Bigos.  The two teams exchanged goals twice over the next five minutes of play before the Spartans took charge, outscoring the Pilgrims 7-1 in the final two minutes of the half to head into halftime up 11-4.

The Spartan offense continued their dominance in the second half of play as they slotted six goals and held the Pilgrims to just one score en route to commanding 17-5 victory.

In addition to Flodstrom, the Spartans were led on offense by Kate Auer, who scored three goals and had two assists. Sarah Clark also notched three goals on the day. Castleton finished the game outshooting the Pilgrims 42-15 and held the 25-9 advantage in ground balls. Samantha Bonasera played well, grabbing three ground balls while earning four draw controls and a caused turnover.

The Pilgrims were led by Merce, who notched two goals on two shots, picked up a ground ball and a draw control. Rebecca Harvey took the loss in net for NEC, despite making 15 saves on the day.

The Spartans will continue their conference road trip on Sunday, April 14 when they travel to take on NAC foe Husson University.
