Castleton, Vt. - The Spartans women's lacrosse team jumped out to a seven-goal lead in the first 15 minutes of play and never looked back, defeating Maine-Farmington 20-6 at Spartan Stadium on Sunday, Apr. 7.
Castleton was led by freshman Brandi Whittemore, who notched four goals and four assists. Amanda Flodstrom also had an eight point outing, notching five goals and three assists. Jessica Taplin and Kate Auer both had four goals as well as the Spartans outshot the Beavers 38-15 on the day.
The Spartans got on the board with a goal just 5:38 into the match. Amanda Flodstrom converted a free position shot to put Castleton up 1-0. The home team scored six more times in the first 15 minutes of the contest to take a 7-0 lead.
The Beavers would not go away though, answering with a 3-0 run keyed by Ayla Allen. Allen notched consecutive goals with 13:56 and 10:43 remaining in the first half, and was followed by a Molly Carbin score with 10:07 remaining to cut the Spartan lead to 7-3. The Spartans wouldn't let the Beavers any closer, finishing the half on a 4-2 run that made the halftime score 11-5.
In the second half, Flodstrom opened the scoring with two goals in the first five minutes of play. Whittemore and Taplin each netted goals as part of a 6-0 run to open the half. Castleton held the Beavers scoreless for the first 18:27 of the second half before surrendering a goal that made the score 17-6.
The Spartans finished the game on a 3-0 run with goals scored by Maddy DaCosta, Whittemore, and Bri MacKay, to go up 20-6.
Hannah Goodenow saved 10 shots for the Beavers in the losing effort, while Lily Derbyshire, Kelsey McDonald, and Meghan Els combined to make five saves for the Spartans. Charlotte Farrell finished with a team-high seven ground balls and a game-best four caused turnovers. Flodstrom, Whittemore, and Samantha Bonasera each forced three turnovers for Castleton.
The Spartans improve to 3-7 on the season and 2-0 in the North Atlantic Conference, increasing their winning streak against conference opponents to 10 games over the past two season. Castleton will return to action Wednesday, Apr. 10 when they travel to Poultney to take on the Green Mountain Eagles. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
