Castleton downs Westfield State, secures second-seed in NEWLA Tournament

Castleton, VT - Nicole Adams, Stephanie Pearce and Marie VanDerKar each surpassed 100 career goals, and the Castleton State College women's lacrosse team earned the second-seed in the upcoming New England Women's Lacrosse Tournament with an 11-9 victory over visiting Westfield State. With the win the Spartans improve to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in alliance play. Westfield State falls to 11-5 and 5-2 in NEWLA action.

Castleton held an 8-6 advantage at halftime, and held on for the final 30 minutes of even play for the pivotal 11-9 win. The Spartans were quickest out of the gates as three unanswered goals, one from VanDerKar and two from Adams made the score 3-0 six minutes into the contest. Westfield's Laura Chiricosta and Ally Brown answered with back-to-back tallies to make it 3-2. The two teams traded goals to make it 4-3 Castleton, before the Spartans went on a 4-0 run, seemingly taking control with 6:49 remaining in the opening half and a five-goal cushion. Adams keyed the run with a goal and assist. Westfield answered with a 3-0 run of its own, as Rachel Costa capped it off with her 14th goal of the season and only 16 seconds remaining before halftime.

The Owls opened the second half with a goal by Dionne making it 8-7, but it was as close as they would come as Castleton scored two quick goals inside the 16-minute mark and held on down the stretch.

VanDerKar led the Spartans with four goals and one assist, while Adams added three goals and one helper. Elizabeth Haggerty tallied twice and the Spartans received single markers from Pearce and Stephanie Paproski to round out the scoring. Francesca Mazzola stopped 10 shots in the win, including four down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Dionne led Westfield State with four goals and one assist while Chiricosta chipped in two goals and two assists. Kasey Rogers, Costa and Ally Brown each had single goals for the Owls. Kaity Burns stopped six shots in the loss.

Castleton plays host to Husson University tomorrow morning at 11 in the North Atlantic Conference Championship. Westfield State will travel back to Castleton on Wednesday to square off in the NEWLA Semifinal round at a time yet to be determined.
