RUTLAND, Vt. – Six goals from six different scorers helped the Castleton University women's ice hockey team coast past the New England College Pilgrims in New England Hockey Conference play at Spartan Arena on Monday evening.
Castleton improves to 8-12-3 and 8-4-2 in the NEHC action after earning the victory in the contest that was rescheduled – from Jan 19. – due to inclement weather. Meanwhile, New England College falls to 3-17-1 and 2-9-1 in conference competition.
Going back-and-forth through the first two periods of play, Castleton put its foot on the gas in the third, notching four goals to blow the contest open. Nearing the six-minute mark and just seconds after the conclusion of a powerplay opportunity, Nicolle Trivino notched her third tally of the season. On a pass in front by Casey Traill – from Samantha Munroe – Trivino finished the job to make it 3-1.
Less than two minutes later, Courtney Gauthier extended it the Spartan advantage to 4-1. Cycling the puck through the zone, Aimee Briand sent it to Ryanne Mix who dealt it to Gauthier on the near side wing. Taking a step forward, Gauthier laced it between the goalie and the pipe.
Between the 11-minute and 17-minute marks, Castleton notched two more scores, each on a fastbreak. Bre Babiarz started the break on the first score, racing almost all the way down the ice before poking the puck back to Chanel Tvergyak who sent it into the twine. On the later score, Munroe stole the puck before taking it the rest of the way herself for the Spartans final score of the contest.
Earlier in the game – with just six seconds remaining in the opening stanza – Briand put the Spartans on top, 1-0. Behind the net with the puck, Gauthier moved it to Jade Remillard who followed with a poke shot. As the puck trickled through the crease, Briand followed on the far side of the net and scored.
Following an NEC goal to tie it at 1-1 less than 15 minutes into the second period, Jocelyn Forrest tallied her 13th of the campaign sending Castleton back in front for good. Assisted by Remillard and Traill, the trio sent the puck back-and-forth before Forrest took it the rest of the way, going one-on-one with the netminder for the goal.
Alexis Kalm earned the win for Castleton in goal (3-6-2), playing all but nine seconds between the pipes. The junior goalie made 13 stops to the tune of a .929 save percentage. The Pilgrim's Cianna Weir sent aside 36 shots in the loss.
Following its final home game of the regular season, Castleton will head out on the road for the last weekend of the year. Facing Johnson & Wales at 6:55 p.m. on Friday, the Spartans then close the regular season at Salem State at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
